Welcome to Rotorua Trout Safaris Ltd

Rotorua and the surrounding area offer the highest trout numbers in New Zealand.
The World Fly Fishing Championships have been held in Rotorua twice, the only area
in New Zealand to have this honour. A true testament to the quality of our
magnificent rivers and streams.

Your guide Simon Robertson specialises in remote and back country river
fishing by 4WD vehicle. We  are also able to offer raft fishing and heli fishing options
for those looking for multi day fishing experiences.

With one of the largest National parks in New Zealand on our doorstep, we have a
wonderful variety of water to choose from. The fishing will be challenging, the scenery
superb, and best of all, you will likely not see another angler all day when you fish
with us.

Your Guide
You will be in the best of hands with Simon Robertson, one of New Zealand’s most respected and skilled fly fishing guides with over forty years’ trout fishing experience in the Central North Island. The waters that we fish hold wild Rainbows and Browns and they give an excellent account of themselves. There are no stocked trout and no other fish species in our rivers, so enjoy some exciting sport amidst superb scenery. You can expect fish to range in size from 2lb to 6lb, with the odd monster. We have Department of Conservation concessions for all National parks and reserves in the North Island, and have negotiated access over private land to rivers that have very little angling pressure.

Over 30 rivers in our area can be accessed by 4WD and we generally travel an hour or more out of the city, where you are unlikely to encounter any other anglers. Our day normally gets under way at 8.30am and we will have you home by around 6pm.

We pride ourselves in having the best tackle room in New Zealand and can outfit all sizes from small ladies to XXXOS in Simms Gortex waders, and Simms boots size 5 through to 15. For ladies, we have Simms Ladies cut waders and lightweight boots. Simms wading staffs are also on hand in a range of lengths. We carry exclusively Sage premium rods, SLT, XP, ZXL, Z Axis and Sage One, spooled with Rio and Scientific Anglers lines. We offer a choice of Sage, Scientific Anglers and Hardy’s reels.

If you are bringing your own rod, we would recommend a five or six weight, a weight forward floating line and reel capable of holding 75 - 100 metres of backing. Your guide will attend to all fly's and tippets, but if you wish to bring one of your favourites along, please feel free to do so.

We operate two four wheel drives. A new Mercedes ML for helicopter access and lighter work and a Toyota Landcruiser for the more serious off road adventures. We always have on hand a first aid kit, sunblock, insect repellent, Simms rain jackets and a change of clothes, so you will never be caught out. We carry a full ice box of refreshments including water, soft drinks, beer and wine, and an excellent lodge prepared riverside lunch. We want to make your Rotorua river fishing experience something to remember.

We are agents for all New Zealand fishing licences and can issue these for our guests on the day.

We have excellent relations with helicopter operators in our area and can offer competitive rates for those who wish to explore the very remote areas. A fifteen minute helicopter ride will get you to areas that can take three days to cover on foot through rugged terrain. The most cost effective heli option involves a drive to the edge of the forest where there is a convenient heli port. A more expensive, but time efficient option for those staying with us, and on a tight schedule, is to depart from our Lodge.

A helicopter is certainly not necessary to encounter excellent fishing, but it is a rather special day, flying over some of the country’s most rugged 800-900 year old forests. For heli fishing excursions, an emergency locator beacon is carried by your guide for any unlikely situation that may arise.
